Probate is the legal process of transferring title of a deceased person’s property.
Michigan law has default rules for who inherits your property, called heirs. These rules are in place if you don’t have a Will or Trust. If you have minor children, a judge will appoint a legal guardian to care for them and a conservator to manage any assets you leave behind until they reach age 18. At 18 all assets are handed over to them to manage individually with no further management.
